Described as having “IRC vibes,” Bitchat supports encrypted, ephemeral communication and is aimed at environments with unreliable or no internet, such as protests or disaster zones.

The open-source protocol doesn’t rely on servers or user accounts and supports private and group chats via mesh networking.

Messages are encrypted, stored temporarily, and relayed automatically through nearby devices, making it resilient and censorship-resistant.
